[5] Article of the month: It is what it is, by guest blogger, Mark Beck
In the sky,
There is no distinction of east and west.
People create distinctions out of their own minds
And then believe them to be true.
-- Buddha
Our minds have a strong tendency to label, to categorize things, to make judgments. This is good. That is bad. To each of these distinctions we attach an emotional response. We, therefore, tend to hang judgmental emotional tags upon everything surrounding us. And this is where our problems begin.
Unwittingly, we begin to make our very happiness conditional upon our circumstances. Yet our circumstances – the things in our life as they stand around us – are simply that: things, events, people, etcetera. They simply are.
The thing you like and for which you consequently crave is neither good nor bad. It is what it is. And it is also in a constant state of change. It will not continue forever in its present form. Eventually it will fade away. Where will your happiness then be?
Something upon which you have hung the tag of “bad” and which you now despise also just is what it is. You have unwittingly, however, with your label, empowered it with the ability to make your life very unhappy.
I once showed a friend of mine a photo taken of Earth from space. Her response amazed me. She remarked, “But I don’t see the lines.” “What lines?” I replied. “You know, the horizontal and vertical lines that surround the Earth -- like the ones that we can see on a globe.”
