Article of the month
Since I have lived in Florida, since 2000, I have been downsized 3 times. Downsizing means to have a job sqeezed out of existence for economical reasons. As a career counselor, I know that losing a job is a very stressful event for an adult. It may come a big shock or a big relief, or anything in between. The first thing a job seeker must do is clear out the old and make way for the new. Release the anger and negativity about the old job and old bosses, and let go. In order to find a new job, you must prepare. Rehearse what you will say about your last job. The less said, the better. Do not criticize former supervisors. Do not get angry or sarcastic, or start sobbing. Of course he was a SOB, she was a witch, but you don't want to say that to a prospective employer. I personally recommend and studies confirm, that the best way to do this is to write it down. Write down everything about all your feelings about the last job and workplace. Write it down! Exaggerate! Make it sound like the worst place on Earth, with the stupidest bosses ever mistakenly put in charge of anything or anyone. Then read it. Scream, shout and cheer as you then shred it or burn it. Better yet, shred it and then burn it, too! It seems studies have shown that this is a very helpful exercise if you want to get re-employed. Some job-seekers cannot handle the question, why did you leave your last job in a diplomatic fashion. This will prevent you from getting another offer. Try to come up with a simple answer, like "they eliminated my job for economic reasons" and practice it over and over until you can say it with a straight face. If you can't say it with a straight face, then use a more humorous approach, "My job moved out of the country." Oops, not funny, too close to the truth. If you can think of something funny to say about downsizing, please let me know. See www.musinglog.blogspot.com for the full article.
