[4] The Secret of Self-talk
The National Guild of Hypnotists teaches Self-hypnosis in three steps. The simplest method of self-hypnosis is the best way to make change possible in your life. All you need to do is repeat a positive statement 10 times in the morning when you first wake up and ten times again at night just before allowing yourself to drift off to sleep. This statement can be called a suggestion, an affirmation, or self-talk. What you say to yourself just before sleeping determines what kind of night you will have. If you worry about finances or think about the news just before sleep, it may influence your dreams, or may keep you awake long enough to ruin a truly restful, refreshing period of sleep. What you say to yourself first thing in the morning determines what kind of day you will have. On Monday morning, do you sigh, Oh no, another Monday! Or do you say, Oh great, another opportunity to have a fantastic week!
I learned this technique over 10 years ago. I still use it to keep my mind focused on success. This contributes to a positive attitude, which leaks out into all areas of my life. They say, your attitude determines you altitude. I agree with this. When you walk into a store with a bad attitude, you usually get the same attitude back from the salespeople. If you walk into a bank with a negative attitude in a rush, you will always get the slowest bank teller.
So repeat to yourself: I am always calm and confident at work (or at home, or at the in-laws' house, or wherever you need it most).
I have a wonderful opportunity today to be patient and kind to others.
or
I enjoy vibrant health and energy every day.
I have found self-talk to bring amazing results. When everyone at the office is feeling poorly, taking sick days, and complaining about how the flu or cough or whatever is "going around," I just keep affirming excellent health with the statement immediately above.
You may notice that most of my statements have "always" or "every day" or "all the time" in them. I got that technique from the book, What to Say When You Talk to Yourself (see book review).
This may sound a little awkward at first, but think about it, when you can't find your keys, don't you say, "I can NEVER find my keys when I'm going out!" or "I always misplace things." These statements are exaggerations, resulting from exasperation. So you want to cancel out these negative statements with positive statements, that are even more exaggerated than the negative ones.
